Mary Murphy is a painter based in Philadelphia and New York. She earned a BA in English/Writing from Barnard College, an MA in Art & Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art. She also studied at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and The New York Studio School.
A solo exhibition of Murphy’s work, Hybrids, was on view at Hillyer Art Space in Washington, DC this past February 2018, and new work will be exhibited this fall at Brooklyn Art Cluster as part of the Gowanus Open Studios, with a solo exhibition in the BAC Project Room in December. Past solo shows include Grotesques; Mary Murphy: Self-Portraits; and Mary Murphy: Family Portrait(s), all at Schmidt/Dean Gallery in Philadelphia; Mary Murphy: Self-Portraits at the University of AL, Anchorage, AL; Translations, at dfn Gallery, NYC; Focus at Larry Becker Contemporary Art in Philadelphia; Fleisher Challenge Grant #4 at the Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia; and Contemporary Miniatures at S.P.A.C.E.S., Cleveland.
Murphy’s work was recently on view in Regional: Pennsylvania at Manifest Creative Research Gallery in Cincinnati, restructured at the Nave Gallery Annex in Somerville, MA, Identity at the Midwest Center for Photography in Wichita, KS, SHIM Invitational 4 at ArtHelix Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, and the 2017 Juried International at The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, NJ. Other recent exhibitions include SCHEMA at Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Color at BWAC in Brooklyn, NYC, both in 2016, Instashow at Silicon Gallery in Philadelphia and the 274th Juried Exhibition at Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, both in 2015, and Centennial 2012 at the DE Art Museum, Wilmington, DE in 2012. Murphy was the featured artist of Schmidt/Dean Gallery at the SCOPE Art Fair in Miami Beach, Fl in 2005. Her work appeared in the winter, 2013 edition of Studio Visit Magazine (Juror: Margaret O’Brian).
Murphy has written about art as a feature writer and reviewer for The New Art Examiner, Title Magazine, and the artblog. She has also been active in Aesthetic Education, moderating panel discussions on contemporary art. She interned at the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education She was the creator and presenter for many years of Talkabouts, a series of nine participatory gallery talks per year on The Fleisher Challenge emerging artist grant exhibitions at The Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia. She has presented on Subliminal Narrative at the CAA Annual Conference and has participated as an artist on panels for Abstract Strategies at The Philadelphia Art Alliance, Selections 47 at The Drawing Center, NYC, and Composition and Revision at the College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, NY.
She is the recipient of an NEA Fellowship in Painting, a PA State Council on the Arts Fellowship in Painting, and is a three time finalist for a PEW Fellowships in the Arts. She has also been a finalist for a Fulbright Award to Spain, and a finalist for the Franz and Virginia Bader Fund Grant.
